At the National Oceanic Resource Management Authority (NORMA), investing in and developing our young people is central to securing the future of our nation’s marine resources. NORMA recently recognized the successful completion of three-month internship placements for two exceptional young professionals, Donovan (left) and Shadraq (right).
During their three months at NORMA, Donovan and Shadraq were embedded directly within our Science and Compliance Divisions. Through hands-on, practical placement, they gained valuable real-world exposure to fisheries management and marine conservation while actively contributing to key organizational tasks. Working alongside experienced division staff, the interns applied their skills, broadened their technical understanding, and brought fresh perspectives and dynamic energy to the office.

To mark the conclusion of their placements, Donovan and Shadraq delivered presentations summarizing their key learnings, work contributions, and takeaways from their time at NORMA. The presentations demonstrated not only their strong grasp of NORMA’s mission to protect the Pacific's maritime resources and safeguard food security, but also the practical career pathways available within fisheries administration. Impressively, Donovan expressed interest in pursuing future professional opportunities with NORMA.

NORMA has a strong track record of transitioning dedicated interns and work-study students into full-time staff members- such as current Assistant Biologist Shawn Walter- demonstrating how early career exposure directly builds our workforce capacity.
Addressing the team during the intern recognition, both Executive Director Camille Inatio and Deputy Director Mathew Chigiyal emphasized the vital role young leaders play in driving NORMA’s mission forward. By providing structured internship opportunities, NORMA remains committed to equipping the next generation of fisheries professionals with the experience, skills, and passion needed to safeguard the Federated States of Micronesia’s oceanic resources for years to come.
